Slides from a talk on playful product design
As part of researching and designing at Canva; for both a fairly playful company and a playful audience (students), I’ve been reflecting on play as a research paradigm and the principles of play in that practice.
(You can view part of this page as a presentation I gave here)
When working with adults to integrate play into practice, I see ghosts of the following phrases reflected on their faces, stiff in how they grip their pencils…in a slight hesitation to pick up the lego.
At this stage- I remind us all to take a step back and appreciate all the shapes, sizes and sounds that play can come in. From fantasy football to a game about building paperclips.
Play is personal and looks different to everyone. In design however, we can apply playfulness to any work we do; as an attitude, even when play doesn’t fit with our business as usual.
Follow are some examples of play being used outside the context of play.
